Racing and rules

Club races

Races happen on Sunday mornings starting at 10:30 am sharp. Please arrive at least an hour before to begin rigging and warming up. Skippers' meeting is held at 10:00 am. All sailors tall or short, young or young-at-heart are welcome and needed. It's a lot of fun and there's always someone to help out if you are just getting started. The Learn to Sail program is also a great way to prepare for beginning to race.

View the calendar for race dates. Race results will be posted following each race.

Contact the fleet captains if you have questions about racing activities, race day volunteering or sailing at GRYC in general. The summer is short, so be sure to make the most of it.

Rules and guidelines

The GRYC follows the Racing Rules of Sailing as set by International Sailing Federation (ISAF) and the Sail Canada.

The starting sequence for all GRYC sanctioned races (unless otherwise stated on race day) is as follows:

  • 5 minutes from start: waring signal (class flag, 1 sound)
  • 4 minutes from start: preparatory signal (preparatory flag, 1 sound)
  • 1 minute from start: 1 minute signal (preparatory flag removed, 1 long sound)
  • 0 minute: starting signal (class flag removed, 1 sound)

For more information on rules and regatta management, see the competitive sailing section on the Sail Canada website.

GRYC uses the St. Lawrence Valley Yacht Racing Association (SLYVRA) race handicap scoring system. Race scoring is carried out by the Race Scoring Committee.

Results will be posted following each race. Past season results are also available.
