Service Hours at GRYC (Volunteering)
At the Gatineau River Yacht Club, we are a member-run community. In addition to a small seasonal staff, members help make the Club successful by contributing service hours throughout the season.
Service hours are an important part of membership and help keep membership fees lower while building a strong, welcoming club community.
Information for GRYC Members is available at Service Hours (Volunteering).
How Many Hours Are Required?
| Membership Type | Annual Requirement |
| Adult Membership | 8 hours minimum |
| Family Membership | 16 hours minimum |
For Family memberships, the required hours may be shared among family members.
Honorary and Retaining Members are exempt.
What Counts as Service Hours?
There are many ways to contribute, and members can choose opportunities that match their interests, abilities, and schedules.
Examples include:
- Helping at Club Nights and social events
- Assisting with races and regattas
- Helping with projects for construction and maintenance of clubhouse, dock, and island
- Supporting sailing programs and special events
- Serving on committees or the Board
- Administrative or behind-the-scenes support
Some activities may take only a few hours, while larger projects or committee roles may contribute most or all of the annual requirement.
A Flexible and Supportive Approach
- Most members complete their service hours by helping with one or two events, a few short work sessions, or an ongoing role during the season.
There is a wide variety of opportunities available each year, so whether you enjoy social events, hands-on projects, organizing, or helping behind the scenes, there is usually a role that is a good fit.
Older teens and young adults in family memberships are also welcome to contribute where appropriate.
Why We Require Service Hours
Service hours help:
- Keep membership costs affordable
- Maintain Club facilities and programs
- Support racing, sailing, and social events
- Build a stronger sense of community among members
At GRYC, members are not just joining a marina or sailing facility—they are becoming part of a community where everyone contributes.
